THE COTSGOLDS  Entertain friends over home-cooked grub in an idyllic cottage in the Cotswolds and enjoy a trip to nearby Blenheim Palace

The staff at Bruern Cottages in Oxfordshire leave nothing to chance for their guests

WEIGHED down by suitcases, a rucksack on each shoulder and a coolbox stuffed with snacks, it looked like we were travelling long-haul for a month.

But no, we were away from home for just two nights, staying in a picture-postcard Cotswolds village.

There is a five-star welcome at Bruern Cottages in Oxfordshire

There is a five-star welcome at Bruern Cottages in Oxfordshire.

As I stepped over the threshold of Wychwood Cottage in Bruern it felt just like home — but much better.

Our excessive packing went totally to waste because everything we could have hoped for in this self-catering, two-bedroom country pad was provided.

The welcome hamper itself could have nearly kept me, my wife Kelly and daughters Savannah, five, and three-year-old Scarlett going for the whole trip.

Fresh bread, bacon from a local butcher, tasty hens’ eggs, milk, a whopping chunk of Gloucestershire cheese and a selection of breakfast cereals awaited us.

Top tourist attractions on your doorstep include the spectacular Blenheim palace.

A lemon sponge cake worthy of The Great British Bake Off sat on the dining table and some honeycomb and lemon ice cream waited in the freezer.

And tucked away in the side of the fridge was a bottle of champagne. This was truly a five-star welcome — as staff at Bruern Cottages in Oxfordshire leave nothing to chance for their guests.

But before we could tuck into the scrummy delights, the children wanted to make a splash at the on-site indoor swimming pool.

We got there through soon-to-bloom wisteria and apple tunnels that led from the cottage’s terrace.

But our visit to the pool was put on hold by the kids’ discovery of the adjacent playground. It is perfect for little ones.

There is also a summer house full of toys and a two-storey Wendy house.
