Wonderful, relaxing stay
We had a fantastic first stay at Bruern Cottages (6 nights)
Our family of five – two adults and three children ages 12, 10 and 4, plus our 7 year old yellow Labrador – stayed in Goodwood cottage as you can take a dog there.
We only booked a few weeks before as we decided we wanted to get away for a change of scenery and routine during our children’s half-term.
I was searching for something with a swimming pool which is how I came across Bruern. I also liked that you can book any available days for any duration, rather than many holiday lets being Mon-Fri, Fri-Mon, Fri-Fri or Sat-Sat etc.
The swimming pool was perfect especially this time of year with the typical British February weather – it’s nice to have some indoor entertainment for the children. We used it several times and we all loved it. It’s a great addition to the cottages. It’s a very comfortable temperature too.
The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and very clean and well maintained.
I really liked the wallpaper in the twin and single bedrooms plus the cast iron bed frames and the single four poster bed.
The mattress in the main bedroom was very comfortable and all of the sheets were clean and soft.
There were two stair gates available which were very useful.
The only thing I could think of that we could have made use of was bottle stops for wine and champagne/sparkling wine. If there were any I apologise as I couldn’t see any.
There were some very generous food and drink products left for us to enjoy (which we very much did, thank you), including a very nice bottle of vintage 2009 English sparkling wine and even treats for our dog.
Most of all I loved all of the antique/vintage furniture, furnishings books in the cottage. These give it a lovely character and I assume much of it was brought over from Bruern Abbey when it was sold. How lovely to include the pieces in the cottages. I enjoyed looking at them all as I love history. The painted chest of drawers and dressing table mirror in the twin bedroom are beautiful – if you ever decide to sell any of them please let me know 🙂
Thanks for including children’s books too. My daughter read the whole 471 pages of Jacqueline Wilson’s ‘Katy’ in two days.
Goodwood has a generous sized private garden which would be very nice in a warmer season. We couldn’t let the dog in it as there’s a few gaps in the hedges which he likely would have tried to go through but he was happy to be walked around the lovely grounds. There’s a few steps down to the garden too which he would have struggled with as he only has three legs. Snowdrops are currently in their short flowering period and they are poisonous to dogs and being a Labrador he would have probably tried to eat them.
There is also great Wi-Fi and Sky TV.
The cottages are well located to explore nearby towns and villlages. We enjoyed walking through Burford, Stow on the Wold, and the children really enjoyed our day at Cotswold Wildlife Park.
We had very nice lunches at Bruern Farms Shop and Cafe and the Hare in Milton-Under-Wychwood.
One night we had an excellent takeaway (collection) from Spice Lounge Burford.
I am sure we will be back in the future sometime and I would like to stay in other cottages too so I can look at their furniture too.
